I remember buying news papers published from calcutta, paying more than Rs 2.50 per copy from silchar town - it was mid-90. Now, our town (silchar, Assam) itself has 4 medium sized regional language newspapers - the availability of so called national papers, there, has gone down drastically.
I think MJ Akbar's Asian Age was responsible for starting a slash-the-price competition between the major players that time.
However, the expansion of readership does not mean enhancement in quality. Probably it was only The Asian Age which invariably used to have a semi-nude western star featured in its main page. It pioneered reporting private lives of bollywood movie stars. I no longer see this newspaper in the stands in this part (eastern India) these days ; Times of India, fills this gap. Also, it seems, with time, the events which earlier considered having no news-value, are flashed in the first page. This has a direct positive impact -politicians have to be more careful in indulging in corruptions; at least some of them do not accept money themselves…. cops have to look left-right before stretching out hand to the truck driver ….Z@ki-Rhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05727175730234889202noreply@blogger.com
