Majority can wreck society, act as its own enemy: How right-wing majoritarianism creates a wound and becomes an enemy of the society
Shams Ur Rehman Alavi
When a society gets deeply polarized, a section targets another section daily, hate crime & hate speech become common, without any check...
What will happen? If you hate a section of own people, you don't need enemy as you have become the main force destabilizing your own society.
Strangely, those who abuse, target and attack, coin new and cheap terms to use them to harass other section, feel that they are doing a service to their nation.
They feel they have an enemy and are acting against it. Actually, the enemy they seek is no where else. They just need to see the mirror. They are the 'enemy' themselves.
The majoritarian tendencies that turn towards fascism, have the potential to tear apart social fabric. People indeed fall for it, get almost mad, obsessive and they can't be made to see reason.
This section becomes a zombie. They don't understand anything. You can't discuss an issue with them, because they have already been poisoned to so much extent and brainwashed to a level that discussion is totally meaningless.
They feel they are the ruling class and have the right to sit on others' chest and demand 'explanation' as per their own terms, as if they are first class citizens and the rest are second class citizens.
Bigotry turns them into maniacs and they imagine that the other group is completely homogenous and imagine certain things about that entire groups and there is no a millimeter they can change their opinion, even after piles of evidence.
This is a classic behaviour in those societies that witness rise of fascist tendencies. When a group is about to go into self-destruction mode, they start complaining and hating everything. They are never satisfied, always talking about any issue under the sun, while competing with the second or third group.
This compulsive and obsessive behaviour and the 'what about them' mindset, always 'competing' with other group, takes them to a level where chance of civilized conversation or a decent debate is zero.
As extremely vulgar and insensitive terms are used, the other sections find it difficult to engage or respond. Cheap language is one of the examples that a society is turning rotten. The more cheap is the language, the higher is the level of rot.
It is always felt, people experience it. The rowdy groups and the vigilantes that are not connected with government, appear and take law in their hands. They get treated softly and become part of system. In a way, they feel they are powerful but at the same time lament about own weakness.
They keep on repeating that they are powerless, again, comparting themselves to 'other'. This is also used to exhort other people from the majority community to embrace this ideology and follow the same path of right-wing extremism and radicalism.
When you create a wound, scratch it and then obsess over it, there is no escaping the issue, the wound keeps growing and it demands to be scratched more and more, until this process turns them into an extension of the wound.
