Indian Muslims, Ulema lead in terror condemnation

It was an extraordinary event. Thousands of Ulema decided to reach Hyderabad and endorse the fatwa against terrorism, which was earlier issued at the Deoband seminary this year.

Without any political support or any pressing need to say it, the Ulema went ahead and decided to hold the event. Though earlier in Delhi, Deoband, Kanpur, Kolkata and Bhopal, similar anti-terrorism conferences had been held in the last few months, the grand congregation was called again.

They planned, spent their own money and organised the mega conference. Called spiritual leaders of other communities from Sri Sri Ravi Shankar to Swami Agnivesh, and spoke in one clear voice. And said it loudly, 'Terrorism is un-Islamic' and cleared the myths about Jehad. Still, this is not the last such event.

Such strong voice of clergy has emerged from India. It again establishes Indian Ulama as one of the most progressive Muslim clergy in the Islamic world. It is the same clergy led by the Jamiat-e-Ulema that had fought against the British imperialist forces before independence--a struggle in which thousands of Muslim clergymen had laid their lives.

Once again the religious leadership has come forward to say it clearly that no religion should be linked with terrorism. In context of the arrest of Sadhvi Pragya Thakur and other Hindu militants including an Army official for Malegaon bomb blasts, the Ulama said that linking it to religion is absolutely wrong.

A special train named Sheikhul Hind Express had taken thousands of clerics from Deoband to Hyderabad for this national convention. Those who keep on repeating the charges that Muslims don't condemn terrorism enough, should now shut up. Of course, those who can't stand the sight of Muslims on this land will never be convinced.

Assalamu alaikum wrb bro!

Alhamdhulillah, WE MUSLIMS from every corner of this world shout out aloud that Islam has nothing to do with terrorism.

How do we know said...

:-) This is good coverage. As usual, i notice that the mainstream media has left this event out too. We live in times of masala cooking when everyone is already down with indigestion. Sad.

I don't think the mainstream media ignored it completely...atleast i saw this news in all english news channels!

Here is one interesting perspective reg this Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind's resolution. Anyway, the author is talking about something that happened 70 years ago. Still, if they go ahead and change it, then that looks like a really daring act.

But is it needed? I personally think it's not needed.

My salutes to the organisers of this event. I m a Hindu and feel tht by inviting a personality like H.H.Sri Sri Ravishankarji and other spiritual & religious leaders we have given a clear picture of our Religious Harmony in India. Wish to see such co-operation in future also and believe tht it is not just the responsibilty of the Muslims but also hindus and other religions to de-link the name of a beautiful religion like Islam or any religion with Terrorism. A religion never proposes Terrorism n wht it truly teaches is alwayz ignored most of the time.... We stand with our Muslim brothers and unite in one voice for NO TERRORISM and a TERROR-FREE SOCIETY. :)

"those who can't stand the sight of Muslims on this land will never be convinced"
Man!!! u summed up the "parivar".
Looking at this, I feel enlightened. Really, discussing with people (at rediff msg boards) and in real life, and observing them, i used to get frustrated as to why so many of them, despite all evidence to the contrary, think that muslims have been and are being appeased / pampered, and why so many of them do not have any problem praising modi, sharing stage with him, why so many of them do not have any issue with the lawyers refusing to represent some accused (not convicted) persons, why so many of them talk about human right activists in such an inhuman way.
The answer I got in ur statement, "those who can't stand the sight ..."

Great post! It's so important for Muslims around the world (especially India) to stand up and proclaim that terrorism has no place in Islam. I'm so pleased to hear that such an event was organized and I hope there are many more.

Tarun - it's so great to have your support! I agree with Anser Azim, I pray that your voice echoes throughout India. India would benefit greatly with more people that think like you.

In response to terror attacks, Muslim & Muslim scholars show there disapproval by condemning terrorism, but the profile of such responses is small & ineffective.

Please compare it with the response Muslim gives for incidents like Denmark Cartoon & Salman Rushdi… Is there a difference ?

We can not afford to keep low profile of our responses any longer, which is misinterpreted as our support towards them.

The time has come we show our disapproval towards terrorism: Loud & Clear.

My message to Mr. Terrorist: I am a Muslim but I don’t support you. I am ashamed of what you have done & I am sure the whole society shares this opinion.
You bring shame to humanity & disgrace to Islam.

"Indian Muslims,Ulema lead in terror condemnation!" That was on 11th November,2008. Terrorists attacked Mumbai on the night of 25th and carried out most barbaric acts!195 innocent lives were lost,900 injured and the public held in the grip of panic for 60 hours! Why the Ulemas have not come forward to condemn the misguided who have proved to be"Shame of Islam" and not dedicated to Islam!
(fidayeen).Islam taboos "suicide" and "homicide".Moulana Mohamed Ali has aptly remarked that "the suffering of persecution and tortures at the hands of Koraish for the sake of their 'faith', was no less "jihad"for the Muslims of Makkah than their fighting in defence of Islam at Madinah!"What prevents the Muslim intelligentia to declare that "Terrorists are not Muslims nor their barbaric acts "jihad"!

This is the need of an hour. I believe that we should understand that mostly all educated and moderate Muslims and Hindus think alike and they never support any kind hatred. It is only illiterate breed which is being mobilized by either fantics or people having their vested interests. I think we should also see the good side of media due to which only we get see and hear what is happening and only media is responsible to mobilize people in such state of anguish. The more people see, the more they get touched and united. We have to stand unite here and make our leaders accountable to their deeds. There are tens of initiatives going around with distinct approach but only one objective which is to show that we want a change. One such initiative www.whatnationwants.com also aims to put forward all our voices together in front on our leaders. You may like to contribute as well.
Before ending it here I believe that all eminent religious leaders should come forward and speak up, So that Polictical leaders also should understand that there is nothing called Religious Vote Bank any more. The more Muslim voices will, more Hindus will be convinced who are not currently and more there will be constructive and united drive will emerge to save our nation.

Terrorism is not a muslim monoply.

Tarun Weekly! said...

@ Ahsan: By saying tht Terorism is not a Muslim monopoly u r somewher trying to say tht Terrorism is not only caused by islam but all other religions also. Terrorism is not a cause of religion but a proponent of Dogmatic beliefs.
The idea of Saffron cloth: The saffron cloth worn by most Hindu leaders is a sign of Dispassion or Sanyasa but today's world associates to a Religion Hinduism.
We have lost the understanding of the most subtler things of life...
