If Bajrang Dal creates fear, instills insecurity among people in Mangalore, what Congress government in Karnataka is doing?

In Mangalore, the Bajrang Dal's politics of fear is ultimately about good business sense, says a report published in Scroll.

It tells us that Bajrang Dal is feared by people including mall owners, shop owners and common citizens.

Hence, there is a huge demand for private security. The Bajrang Dal runs its own security service to meet this demand.

So, if you need 'protection' from Bajrang Dal, you have no option but to again go to Bajrang Dal and hire their security personnel, who are obviously from the Bajrang Dal.

This business model is based on fear. You want to avoid extortion [paying hafta] or escape undue attention of those who don't need to fear the law, the best way is to pay them officially, through their agency.

Dhirendra K Jha's report that appeared in the Scroll, reveals how the the outfit has "managed to breed a sense of insecurity...(that) generates a demand for security guards, which are then supplied by a company run by the Bajrang Dal's top leader in Karnataka".

It quotes the leader, Saran Kumar. “All the supervisors and most of the security guards who work for the company are Bajrang Dal workers,” Sharan told Scroll.in. “As a Bajrang Dal leader, it is my duty to secure the livelihood of karyakartas [workers]", he says.

Ruling party ignores extortion, politics of fear: Congress' responsibility!

Once again, you end up criticising the Bajrang Dal for its strong-arm tactics. But who is responsible? After all, Bajrang Dal is just an outfit and if it is responsible for creating a 'climate of fear', there should be action against it.

It is Congress that rules Karnataka. Coastal Karnataka has been notorious for right-wing outfits' moral policing. Bajrang Dal, Ram Sene and other similar groups have been active here for long, still, Congress never took stern action against them.

The outfits that should have been banned, function openly and without fear of the law. Instead, they run a parallel government on the ground. How is it that Congress always allows such groups to be active in states that it has ruled for decade?

Shiv Sena is just another example. Congress ruled for most part of the last four decades or so, [from the beginning when Shiv Sena gained strength]. Its workers and leaders remained outside the purview of law. These groups also spread hatred and end up hurting Congress too.

Still, the party either fails to realise it or its leaders have sympathy for the Sangh's ideology. What else explains the manner in which the party has always been soft on Bajrang Dal--the militant arm of Sangh Parivar. Screenshot: Scroll.in

Bajrang Dal engineers riot in Karnataka after Muslim barber refused to shut shop on 'Tuesday'

In a shocking incident, right-wing extremist group Bajrang Dal engineered a communal riot in a town in Mangalore district, after a Muslim man refused to shut his shop on 'Tuesday'.

This riot over' barber's insistence on haircut' took place in Nelliyadi in Mangalore. The barber, Salman, opened his salon but was asked by local Bajrang Dal leader to shut it, 'as Hindus don't get haircut on Tuesday'.

When Salman refused, Bajrang Dal and allied Hindutva groups' members attacked Muslims and ransacked property. Dozens were injured and property worth lakhs was gutted.

Incidentally, Karnataka is ruled by Congress but right-wing extremists' activities have increased in the State, especially, in Mangalore district in recent years.

This report published in Hindustan Times, tells that Bajrang Dal leader Ravi Bally asked Salman to down the shutters in view of 'local sentiments' but he refused. Popular Front of India (PFI) members' names has also come up in this rioting. PFI is a Muslim group active in this region.

This year alone, over 150 communal incidents have occurred in Mangalore. The district was once known for communal harmony, education and openness among members of different religious communities.

Congress' indifference to Saffron siege in Mangalore, coastal Karnataka may cost it dearly

Mangalore seems to be under Saffron vigilante's rule even though it is the Congress government that is in power in Karnataka.

The latest incident is that of a couple which was 'caught' on a beach as the teenaged girl and boy 'seemed' to be belonging to different religions.

They were taken to police station, the youth was assaulted brutally and arrested. His mother died of heart attack after the incident.

Also, Bajrang Dal stopped a study tour, because non-Hindu students were also part of the co-ed tour. A nun was also abducted in a recent incident.

Incidents of inter-religious couples targeted by moral police, attacks on places of worship and attacks on minorities' are a regular feature in the city. And this has become a pattern in the entire region.

Earlier, a college student's photo with girls, led to goons thrashing him. There is distrust and widening distance between communities.

With Saffron groups growing culture policing, there is reaction from other sides too. As a result, the Muslim groups are also focusing on moral policing, it is reported.

Mangalore was once known for its tolerant and syncretic culture. But today it is known for communal conflicts. For almost a decade, the city has been a witness to increasing religious tension.

After every incident, there is outrage but no tough action--the perpetrators are booked under ordinary sections and promptly released on bail. Karnataka is among the few big states where Congress is still a major player.

But as the party refuses to take a stand, others are claiming the space. Those aware of the ground situation say PFI is stepping in, as minorities feel Congress can't protect them. Still, the grand old party, doesn't seem to have learnt any lesson.

Congress' lack of conviction on secularism and upholding secular values cost it Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The situation reached a point where minorities (Muslims) in these states got so sick of it that they won't want to vote for the party, even at the 'risk' of BJP's victory.

If the party keeps dithering, it will become a marginal player here too, in future.
