What's the caste composition of India? The recent controversy over reservation has once again opened the lid off India's caste cauldron. So, what is the percent of OBCs (Other Backward Castes) in India's population. The figures range from 40% to as high as 52%. In fact, it is also possible that the OBCs could number around 40% of Indian population. In some regions, the backward castes are landed communities and influential but have little presence in government jobs. Caste-wise population and their percentage in India As per ancient system, except Brahmins, Kshatriyas and Vaishyas , all the others are Shudras [almost 90% of India's population]. Biggest cities in India before independence: Census reports show huge changes in growth of Indian cities, their population

Shams Ur Rehman Alavi There has been a staggering rise in population of cities in India, since independence. More people migrated to cities and the rapid urbanisation led to cities turning into mega cities. The increase in population has been huge in the last few decades. Bagalore, Surat and Pune have emerged as big cities, among the top ten in the country. If we go back and check census figures, we find out they were much smaller cities. Prior to Independence, there were just two million plus cities--Calcutta and Bombay. The population of Kolkata was more than 21 lakh or 2.1 million. Bombay was 1.489 million i.e. 14.89 lakh, the second largest city in terms of population. All others didn't even have a population of 1 million or 10 lakh. Madras [Chennai] was third at 7.77 lakh and Hyderabad was 7.39 lakh. At fifth place was Lahore--6.71 lakh. The remaining five in the top ten included--Ahmedabad, Delhi, Kanpur, Amritsar and Lucknow. MYSTERY: Do you know population of Brahmins in India in crores, extrapolate on Census data

Shams Ur Rehman Alavi Do you know what's the exact percentage of Brahmins in the country? Among the Upper Castes, Brahmins are the biggest group, numerous. In crores. But how many? Last census that recorded it was in 1931. Extrapolation? Some say even Bhumihars got themselves recorded in 1931 census as Brahmins in Bihar. India is huge. Now almost 140 crore. Over last 90 years some communities have grown faster, others grew slower. We've statistics but only question is that is the Brahmin population of India more than population of Spain or just less than Germany's population. Any guess--5 or 8 crore? Actually, it is not at all tough to come to a figure. Just statisticians can find out and take us. Extrapolating the Census figures and the population data that is available in public domain, it is easy to find that it is nearly 6.5 crore.
